Kevin De Bruyne and Sam Kerr named The Athletic’s Player of the Year award winners

The Athletic held their third ‘End of Season Awards’ showwith Kevin De Bruyne and Sam Kerr named the Premier League and Women’s Super League’s Player of the Year respectively.

On receiving the award, De Bruyne told The Athletic: “It’s a pleasure to win these awards.

“To receive individual recognition at the end of a season means that we have achieved success as a team and this is what every player strives for.

“It’s been a long season but for it to end the way it did was a fantastic reward for all of us involved.

Wolves was particularly special because I was just trying to push the team on to the title so to lift the trophy at the weekend was the perfect end.

“Thank you to all the writers and editors who voted for me.”

Similarly, on the managerial level, Thomas Frank and Emma Hayes have been named the Coach of the Year for the Premier League and Women’s Super League respectively.

Frank has impressed during Brentford‘s first season in the Premier League, as the west London club ended up 11 points clear of the relegation zone. Frank’s side collected more points (46) than the other promoted sides, Norwich and Watfordcombined (45).

For Hayes, meanwhile, this is familiar territory after another impressive season at the helm at Chelsea. Hayes won her third consecutive WSL title, while also being named the FA WSL’s Manager of the Season for the third year in a row. This is also Hayes’ second consecutive time she has been named as winner of the The Athletic’s ‘End of Season Awards’.

Elsewhere, Phil Foden was named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Year. Upon accepting the award, the Manchester City midfielder said: I want to say thank you to all the writers and editors who voted for me to win this award.

“Last weekend was an amazing way to end the season and I’m proud that my performances have played a small part in bringing the Premier League trophy back to our fans.

“It’s great to get praise from people who watch so much football throughout the season. Hopefully I can keep pushing on and be in the running for the senior award soon!”
